Earlier this evening I installed Auto Social Poster, a great plugin for Wordpress that automatically posts to Social Bookmarking sites when you make a new post on your blog.   What I didnt do is check if there was a new version, nor did I look for the original archive, so I didnt read the documentation.   End result ?  the plugin didnt work….

My tip for when you install any plugins ?  check if there is a newer version and always work from the original archive so you have the full install with documentation. 

Pretty obvious really, but not when your an Idiot like me !!

So this morning I went to check this blog and only half the page loaded, so I hit refresh and again only half the page loaded… thats odd I thought, but I wasnt too worried as yesterday at work the internet was a bit slow (I suspect there is/was a problem with the network - you know someone dug up a cable somewhere or something).  I figured I’d check again when I got to work. 

Anyway, I got to work and the page was still only loading half way… thats when I realised that I had messed it up when I posted yesterday.  I’d put some html tags into my post without wrapping them in the code tags, so wordpress was trying to read them as part of the page.  Ooops !!

The lesson here is if you want to be sure your site is working properly then its important to check and double check your posts and your site.  When I posted yesterday I was in a bit of a rush and I didnt view the site to check that my post was correct.  An extra minute checking would have saved me from having my site basically inaccessible for approx 18 hours.

When you have a website one of the main things that occupies your thoughts has to be getting your pages indexed, SEO is often portrayed as a bit of a mysterious art, especially by those people out there trying to charge to improve your search engine position. So when I find a new trick it makes me all excited and desperate to share it.

So this morning when I got a google alert for my domain and noticed someone had stumbled one of my articles I immediately went to see who they were and what else they had stumbled. I just ran into a problem, I was trying to create a new category but for some strange reason after I hit the save button nothing happened.  Most odd and most annoying !!

A little bit of checking and I discovered that if you have your default blog address setup to use the www and you login to the admin without it then you can’t create categories. 

So if you ever find yourself unable to create categories check how you’ve logged in.

Time for an update on the upgrade fever that gripped me last time.  Once again I’ve learnt a valuable lesson… don’t start upgrading everything until you are sure that the new version works with ALL your scripts.  After carefully upgrading a bunch of blogs I discovered that the scripts I use to post links suddenly stopped working.

So now I have a bunch of blog installs that I am going to have to delete and re-install using the older version of wordpress.

So todays little bit of advice is test everything you plan to do very carefully before launching into any mass changes.
